Our Carniolan production queens are open-mated Apis mellifera carnica queens, reared in Slovenia from selected maternal lines. They are intended for beekeepers who need queens for working colonies and routine requeening.
Our approach places quality queen rearing alongside the biology of queen development and mating. Selection is a continuing process, rather than a promise that every colony will perform identically.
What are Carniolan production queens?
A production queen is bred primarily for use in a working colony. Our current-season production queens mate naturally in the open. Their maternal origin is known, but open mating does not establish the individual paternal ancestry of each queen.
Selection starts with the maternal colony
Our published selection priorities are gentle temperament, honey production, colony strength and spring development. We use selected maternal lines and assess colony performance to inform breeding choices.
- Temperament: calm colonies are easier to inspect and manage.
- Spring development: population growth matters for building colonies towards the local forage season.
- Honey production: productivity is considered alongside the conditions in which a colony is kept.
- Colony strength: a useful assessment looks beyond a single inspection or a single trait.
Weather, forage, health and management all influence these observations. A strong result in one colony or season is not a guarantee for its descendants in a different apiary.
Open mating and the role of drones
Our website identifies the Sava River valley as the breeding district for production queens and describes the use of selected breeding material for drones. The drone population is important because both maternal and paternal genetics contribute to the next generation.

Queen development, mating and seasonal conditions
Queen rearing must allow for queen development and suitable mating conditions. Unfavourable weather can delay mating and affect the number of queens available. Our dispatch dates therefore remain approximate until confirmed.
Which colonies are production queens intended for?
